International Market Place / Ta-Lin

The International Market is located within an 11 acre district which is being rezoned by the City for mixed-use development with an authentic and unique pedestrian oriented character that highlights the district’s ethnic diversity. The International Market draws its inspiration from ethnic marketplaces and shopping districts around the world. It features an array of ethnic businesses, products and images a vibrant atmosphere filled with sounds, smells and color. A sequence of shaded pathways and small plazas and an internal street through the new building encourage people to walk from one end of the project to the other and provide opportunities for cultural festivals and events. Inside and out, the project is designed to encourage browsing and a sense of adventure.

The project is anchored by the flagship International Market grocery store, a 30,000 FS reincarnation of the successful Ta Lin Market. The TaLin Market first opened in Albuquerque in 1977 and moved to its location at Central and Louisiana in 1982. Already known within the city for its huge selection of imported grocery products and unique produce items, the new, lantern-like structure will support the business’ transformation into a contemporary grocery and ethnic market.

Garrett Smith Ltd. and Gear and Condon Contractors teamed in this $4.5 million Design / Build project. The Construction Document and Bid Pricing Phase took 3 months. Construction took 7 months. The project increased with a $1.4 million City Streetscape project.
